Catalan. Spanish. Neither
These I consider Words of Wisdom:
To myself, I am neither perceivable nor conceivable; there is nothing I can point out to and say: “this I am”. You identify yourself with everything so easily; I find it impossible. The feeling “I am not this or that, nor is anything mine” is so strong in me that as soon as a thing or a thought appears, there comes at once the sense “this I am not”
So said Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897-1981). On the subject of Identification…
In front of this red and yellow flag is a man named Carlos Puigdemont:
Puigdemont is the current President of the Government of Catalonia and he has been in the news a lot recently. Have you heard about him?
Catalonia is a region in north eastern Spain (marked below, in red)
Puigdemont identifies so strongly with this region – officially one of Spain’s autonomous communities – that he would like to separate it from Spain. He is one of many Catalan ‘separatists’.
In front of this red and yellow flag is a man named Mariano Rajoy:
Rajoy is the current Prime Minister of Spain and, as such, one of his tasks is to defend the country he respresents as it is.
Puigdemont called a referendum for Catalonia’s independence on October 1st, and the people voted Yes. However, at the time of writing, no official declaration of independence has been made by Puigdemont.
We would expect Rajoy to speak out against Catalonia’s push for independence, and he has.
So now we have a stalemate: the State threatens potentially severe measures if Catalonia declares independence. Catalonia, for its part, is not saying if it has declared independence or not (!)
Nisargadatta Maharaj again:
So, first of all abandon all self-identification, stop thinking of yourself as such-and-such or so-and-so, this or that. Abandon all self-concern, worry not about your welfare, material or spiritual, abandon every desire, gross or subtle, stop thinking of achievement of any kind. You are complete here and now, you need absolutely nothing.
I know two men who cannot hear those words!
