How to use the subtitles in the Speekee videos

Do you know about the value of subtitles for learning languages?

Speekee comes with optional subtitles. You can choose between Spanish and English, both languages at the same time, or watch with no subtitles at all.

The subtitles option is shown to the bottom right of the video and is marked as CC (Closed Captions). When you click on the CC icon the subtitle options appear and you select your preference.

How to enable subtitles / closed captions

The question is: should you switch them on or not?

The subtitles are mainly there as a guide for you, but they can also serve as an excellent language aid for your child. We suggest you have them switched off when your child is watching Speekee, especially in the early stages.

Note: it would be wrong to describe merely watching the videos as 'passive engagement', although it may not be apparent at first how much Spanish your child is picking up.

Later, as your child becomes very familiar with the Spanish words and phrases you may want to switch the subtitles on as a way of increasing your child's linguistic knowledge. But the key word here is "optional".

One parent commented:

"The interface is easy to use and TB likes to watch the videos in full-screen with the closed captions on. This allows him to read what is being said in both Spanish and English."

On the other hand, many like to watch the videos and pick up the Spanish simply through listening.

Why not experiment and see what works best for your child?

See you next time,

Jim
